To help you prepare for the sights and sounds of construction, we’ve compiled some helpful tips.

Always allow extra time. Detours and lane closures could add time to your commute so plan accordingly.

Check 511. Know before you go and get real-time traffic information by dialing 511 or visiting www.fl511.com.

Buckle up. It’s the law for a reason. Wearing a seatbelt is the best way to protect yourself and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.

Be on the lookout. Pay attention to signs and work zone flaggers.

Turn on your headlights. When driving in a work zone, turn on your headlights so workers and other drivers can see you.

Keep a safe distance between your car and the car in front of you. Tailgating is dangerous, especially in a work zone where unexpected stops can occur quite frequently.

Don’t speed. Speed limits are often lower in work zones. Pay attention to the posted speed and remember that speeding fines are doubled in active work zones.

Keep up with traffic. Don’t slow down to watch the roadwork or speed up to get through faster. Go with the flow!

Stay in your lane. Swerving from one lane to another won’t save you time and creates a dangerous situation for everyone.

Keep your eyes on the road. Avoid distractions like talking on the phone, and devote your full attention to the road.

Expect the unexpected. Work zones are a dynamic environment so always look out for workers and their equipment.

Have some patience. Construction is a temporary situation for a permanent fix – a better I-4!
